Description
Smell Identification Test™ (UPSIT®)
The Smell Identification Test™ (UPSIT®) is a comprehensive 40-item smell identification test used to evaluate olfactory function and identify different levels of smell loss. Also widely known as the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test, the UPSIT® is a standardized smell test used in clinical practice, research, occupational testing, and population studies around the world.
With a test-retest reliability of r = 0.94, the UPSIT® provides a consistent and objective method for assessing a person’s ability to identify odors. The test can provide an absolute indication of smell loss, including anosmia and mild, moderate, or severe microsmia, as well as a relative indication based on age- and sex-related percentile norms.
How the UPSIT® Smell Test Is Scored
The UPSIT® includes normative data from nearly 4,000 men and women across a broad age range. Results can be compared with age- and sex-related percentile norms to help evaluate an individual’s level of smell function. The test also includes an index designed to help identify responses that may not accurately reflect a subject’s true olfactory ability.
For first-time purchasers, we recommend the
SIT™ Administration Manual,
which includes the scoring key inside the front cover and provides guidance for administration and interpretation.
International Smell Identification Testing
The Smell Identification Test™ is available in more than 60 languages, supporting olfactory testing across a wide range of countries, cultures, clinical environments, and research settings. This makes the UPSIT® a practical option for organizations that need a standardized smell identification test for diverse populations.
