Smell dysfunction can significantly impact your health and quality of life. Such loss can also be an early warning of neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
People can have various types of smell dysfunction. Hyposmia is a reduced ability to detect odors. Anosmia is the complete loss of the ability to detect odors. Parosmia is a change in the normal perception of odors such as distortion of familiar smells or when something that smelled pleasant changes to smelling foul. Phantosmia is the sensation of an odor that is not present.
The following list includes some of the underlying causes. It is important to be evaluated with medical tools to understand these causes. Some of these medical tools include the Smell Identification Test (UPSIT®) and Snap & Sniff® threshold testing.
- Aging
- Sinus disease or respiratory infections
- Head injury
- Growths in nasal cavities (e.g. polyps)
- Hormonal disturbances
- Exposure to pesticides, insecticides, or solvents
- Medications such as certain antihistamine and antibiotics
- Radiation for treatment of head and neck cancers
